The Solar and Heliospheric Observatory ( SOHO ) , set in motion in 1995 , stares mostly at . . . yeah . The sunshine . But when its cat’s-paw are trying to image other thing near the Lord’s Day , all that Light Within gets kind of overwhelming . So sometimes cat’s-paw on the SOHO just block the sun out and move around their attention to other things . Like this sungrazer comet .

Imaged in 1996 , the Christmas CometSOHO 6is moving through the corona of the Sun , a kind of swarm of plasm around the star . The epitome present the privileged 8 million kilometers of the corposant , and the gas being released by the comet as it comes closer to the sun and begins melt down ( comets are frosty by definition ) .

SOHO has imaged over 1,500 comet , admit other sungrazers like this one . Most sungrazers , like this one , are call back to come from a individual big comet that passed the Lord’s Day in the 12th hundred and broke up , creating the Kreutz family . SOHO 6 did not survive its rendezvous with the sun , though the unbelievably brightComet ISON , which is not from the Kreutz syndicate , is expected to pass the Sun and escape afterwards this year .
