No , I did n’t get to diddle Halo 5 in virtual reality . I like . But I certain as heck just stepped into a sci - fi video game dreamland at E3 2015 , thanks to Microsoft ’s awe-inspiring HoloLens . Getting briefed for a mission by a holographical soldier ? Cross that off the bucket list .
My first stop at this year ’s Electronic Entertainment Expo was Microsoft , and I jazz thing were run to be rather interesting when I spotted a certain phrase on my badge :

The last time Microsoft give me an “ optic calibration , ” so to speak , it was to measure the distance between my eyes so as to the right way adjust the HoloLens headset .
( What the heck ’s this whole HoloLens thing about ? Readthisandthis . Today ’s headgear seem to be the same — it ’s a crazy sleek plasticy cyborg image headband with a too - narrow-minded theatre of operations of scene . )

But once inside that armored door , sure enough : a stand of HoloLens headset were waiting for me and my fellow diarist . The way was decked out as a sci - fi devil dog barrack , complete with a glow workbench and storage locker — clearly the inside of some heavily armored mammoth ballistic capsule . Called one by one , we sat down on the work bench as staffer garnish as Halo scientists helped us fit the mixed world headgear to our skulls .
Then , the headset take attention of the rest — giving us glowing , float waypoints to follow down the spotless grey armoured bulkhead of a hallway . Just like a picture secret plan ! We go forth in a command center , where a elephantine semitransparent tabular array with huge alloy railings fall in each of stations at which to tolerate — and in the eye , a floating starship . The UNSC Infinity .
Go ahead , click the enlarge glass to see that holograph at full resolution . I ’ll wait . What you ca n’t see : while I was staring at the UNSC Infinity , lilliputian portions of the ship would ignite up when I looked at them , giving me details about her armaments .
Sadly , Halo ’s favorite holographic lady Cortana did n’t make an appearing — fleet about the galaxy with Master Chief , no doubt — but the bring down Commander Palmer made a decent substitute , floor out in aggressive Spartan - corresponding armor . She briefed us on the skirmish we were about to face in Halo 5 ’s novel 12 vs. 12 multiplayer mode . You know : here are the objectives you should capture , the enemy you ’ll confront , thing like that .
