Four years after the launch of the trashcan shaped MacPro , Apple has finally , craftily , announced a unexampled MacPro . The news comesvia John Gruber of Daring Fireball :
Apple is currently hard at work on a “ completely rethought ” Mac Pro , with a modular innovation that can fit high-pitched - oddment central processing unit and big honking red-hot - running GPUs , and which should make it easy for Apple to update with new factor on a regular groundwork .
This is doubtless good news show for Apple fans who demand a powerful motorcar and do n’t have the time or energy to work up it themselves . Over the last ten , Apple ’s screen background pedigree has often languished , but each eventual refresh has unveil a machine too sinewy for the average user . Aspirational machines most of us have zero use for .

But the newfangled MacPro is n’t coming this class . As Gruber take note , Apple is merely announcing the product , through five reporters ( Gruber , Matthew Panzarino , Lance Ulanoff , Ina Fried , andJohn Paczkowski ) for placate old MacPro fans who are eager for an upgrade and may even be eye streamlined machines from Dell and HP ( or plat to construct their own ) .
But why was Apple even pull to pacify fans ? When any wonk with a credit circuit board can go build their own personal computer in an good afternoon , why is Apple going to take five years to build a fresh damn car ?
The problem lie in the warfare of form versus occasion that rests at the heart of Apple ’s innovation ethos . While successful compromise has been find , repeatedly , in the laptop computer space , and , reportedly , in the all - in - one space ( Gruber also mentioned a new redesigned iMac is have a bun in the oven later this year ) Apple has never quite cracked the code when it comes to desktop .

It either work up big , stunning tower like the iconic G5 , or it build tiny over - plan objet d’art of prowess like the G4 Cube and 2013 MacPro . Apple has yet to find a middle solid ground and modernise a machine that is as upgradeable as desktops need to be , while still being as modishly design as Apple ’s card has traditionally been .
And , at least according to Phil Schiller , VP of Worldwide Marketing for Apple , that via media might still be far in the futurity . This quote from his conversation with Gruber is a particular standout :
We ’re not fail to get into exactly what stage we ’re in , just that we told the team to take the time to do something really keen . To do something that can be supported for a long time with client with updates and upgrades throughout the years . We ’ll take the time it takes to do that . The current Mac Pro , as we ’ve said a few times , was constrain thermally and it restricted our power to upgrade it . And for that , we ’re sorry to disappoint customer who wanted that , and we ’ve ask the team to go and re - architect and design something great for the hereafter that those Mac Pro customers who want more expandability , more upgradability in the future . It ’ll cope with more of those needs .

Whatever is come next from Apple will have the expandability background users demand , but it certainly sounds like some of the clutch Apple intent may be give in the process .
