Hollywood is mourning one of its brightest stars,Christopher Plummer, after his death was announced on Friday. He was 91.

The belovedSound of Musicactor had a decades-long career with hits like 2001’sA Beautiful Mind, 2018’sAll the Money in the World, 2019’sKnives OutandBeginners, for which he won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar in 2012.

Plummer’s dearSound of Musiccostar Julie Andrews mourned the actor in a statement to PEOPLE shortly after his death.

“The world has lost a consummate actor today and I have lost a cherished friend,” she said. “I treasure the memories of our work together and all the humor and fun we shared through the years. My heart and condolences go out to his lovely wife Elaine, and his daughter Amanda.”

HisKnives OutcostarChris Evanshonored the actor, calling his death “truly heartbreaking.”

“What an unbelievable loss,” Evans tweeted. “Few careers have such longevity and impact.”

Helen Mirren, who acted alongside Plummer in 2009’sThe Last Station, remembered the actor in a statement to PEOPLE.

“I had the great honour to work with Chris Plummer in his Oscar nominated role of Tolstoy,” she wrote. “He was a mighty force both as Man and Actor. He was an actor in the 19th century meaning of the word—his commitment to his profession. His art was total, theater being a constant and the most important part of the totality of his drive to engage with storytelling. He was fearless, energetic, courageous, knowledgeable, professional and a monument to what an actor can be. A Great Actor in the truest sense.”

Joseph Gordon-Levittwas one of the first celebrities to mourn the actor, simply calling him “one of the greats” in a tweet alongside photos of Plummer playing some of his most famous characters.

In his own tweet,Lostactor Daniel Dae Kim recalled how often he watched Plummer inSound of Musicas a kid.

“One of the many reasons to love #ChristopherPlummer. We watched the #SoundOfMusic so much when I was a boy that he and the Von Trapps felt like family. Rest In Peace, legend,“Kim wrote.

Plummer’s longtime manager and friend Lou Pitt released a statement announcing his death.

“Chris was an extraordinary man who deeply loved and respected his profession with great old fashion manners, self deprecating humor and the music of words,” Pitts said in a statement toVariety. “He was a National Treasure who deeply relished his Canadian roots. Through his art and humanity, he touched all of our hearts and his legendary life will endure for all generations to come. He will forever be with us.”

Plummer was married three times, the first to actress Tammy Grimes, the second to journalist Patricia Audrey Lewis..
