One of the veridical pleasures of check Fringe is seeing the same themes and ideas brought up again and again , in novel and interesting path . Over sentence , these themes start to give away more surprising aspect , and you glimpse a greater meaning to the show .
When mass bet back at Fringe in the geezerhood to come , they wo n’t think the mysteries or the plot devices — they ’ll think about the characters and the thematic territorial dominion the show kept explore . Last night ’s instalment was a perfect illustration of this , giving us a brand novel look at the bedrock themes of Fringe .
raider ahead …

In a nutshell , last nighttime ’s episode had an “ A ” patch about an apparently schizophrenic untested man who tell a home encroachment and murder as it happens — and it turns out that he is linked in a kind of hive mind with a gang of creepy Funny Games - expressive style murder boys . And meanwhile , in the “ B ” plot of ground , Walter figures out why Olivia ’s call up stuff from the “ original ” timeline … and finds that a ampule of Cortexiphan is alarmingly tasty .
So here are the classical Fringe themes that jumped out at us from last night ’s outing , “ A Better Human Being ” :
Madness is knowledge

Walter Bishop , of course of study , has always been the stock - bearer for the idea that rabidness and prevent knowledge go hand in bridge player . But last night ’s episode yield us Sean , who ’s been in a mental mental hospital for seven years because he hears voice — which turn out to be existent . The instalment give us a nice fake - out , because at first we believe that Sean is steer the home - encroacher , rather than just verbalizing their mentation . And Walter , the outstanding advocate of ego - medication , really advocates that Sean should go off his meds , let the lyssa in .
mass can choose to be human
After we hear that Sean is part of a hive brain with a radical of genetically modified kids , we sort of expect him to deform nasty . Especially after he go off his Master of Education , it seems like he ’s about to connect in the group killing fling — but the intellect Sean checked himself into the institution in the first place was because he ’s somehow different than the other GM kids . He ’s appal at the things the voice are saying , and he desire to be human .

The remorseful mad scientist who just wanted child
interference fringe is full of delirious scientists , who try out to toy god for appealing reason . And quite often they wind up palpate contrite , and see that there are sure things that people are not think of to toy with , etc . But also , as last night ’s episode made clear , the mad scientist rationale is about reproduction . It ’s about perpetuate yourself , both because of ego and because everybody wants to leave something behind in his or her own image . It ’s hardly a surprise when we find out that not only did Dr. Owen Frank genetically alter the kids to give them quasi - telepathic major power , he ’s also the mystery sperm donor . ( Rule of thumb : Whenever there ’s an unscrupulous birth rate Dr. and a mystery sperm donor , they ’re always the same person . ) Because mad scientists always want , deep down , to have child .
Olivia has thoughts that are not her own

Poor Olivia . When she ’s not give John Scott in her head , she ’s have Fauxlivia ’s storage imbed in her . Olivia is like the poster girl for having someone else in your head — and yet , she always manages to be Olivia . And once again , Anna Torv does a not bad job communicate the weirdness of having multiple versions of reality in your head all at once . Like the detail below , this one is perhaps more of a “ motive ” than a “ idea ” — but it does get at themes of indistinguishability and how we manufacture our self out of contradictory , knotty memory .
Olivia is a greaseball hog
If Olivia Dunham was any more of a guinea pig , she ’d ask a familiarity ball to get around . It flex out her memory of the “ wrong ” timeline have nothing to do with her visit to the proportion - straddling town of Westfield , and everything to do with Nina Sharp ’s evil experimentation on her . Once again , Olivia ’s being dosed with monumental amounts of Cortexiphan , as Walter finally deduces . ( It strikes me that the whole last couple class of Fringe have been a ploy to elaborate the Peter - Olivia romance by bedevil more and more bizarre obstacles in their way of life . ) I ’m really glad that the two dangling plotlines ( Olivia fuck off Nina - related migraines , Olivia remembering material ) turn out to be connected .

Peter is just a love pawn
It ’s so cunning keep an eye on Peter render to envision out how to manage with the late switch of his “ wrong Olivia ” love affair post . Because he already screwed up with Fauxlivia , and he does n’t need to betray “ his ” Olivia again . But in the goal , he ’s like , whatevs , might as well love the Olivia you ’re with . Until she vanish , of course .
What was new , though , was the heroic , badass Walter / Lincoln team up . I really trust this is the showtime of the Walter / Lincoln partnership — much was made of the awesomeness of Lincoln and Peter team up up a while ago , but for some reason the Lincoln / Walter squad - up was even more fantastic . Maybe just because Walter was truly , full - on pissed that somebody ( other than him ) had been experimenting on Olivia , and Lincoln back him up . The moment where Nina is like “ Just permit me make a few speech sound cry , ” and Lincoln taste her down , was really special . ( Also expectant : When Walter thinks Peter has somehow influenced Olivia to start commemorate his reading of events , and Walter protrude giving Peter the stink - eye . ) I kind of require a twirl - off where Walter and Lincoln go around peck bad guys and taking names .

So in the end , we pick up the not - all - startling trueness : Nina ’s a shapeshifter , and the real Nina is tied up someplace … where the nobble Olivia is now captive as well . Looking forth to seeing where this goes .
