One of the adept things about the first season of American Gods was how its thematic aspiration came to life inside the mould ’s starring performances . Things often sustain weird and elliptic on the adaptation of Neil Gaiman ’s 2001 novel , but you could n’t quit watch because of the fantabulous acting on presentation . Here ’s how some of the show ’s player brought their characters to life .
Last week , after the time of year finale ended with a lurid act of cosmic power , I verbalise to several histrion who ’ve been play legendary organism on American Gods . We ’ll be revolve these interview out over the next couple of days , pop out today with Orlando Jones talk about where Mr. Nancy ’s voice come from , why Shadow Moon should listen to Mr. Nancy , and how Sleepy Hollow changed his thinking about fans .
Along Came a Spider
Orlando Jones’first scene on American Godsserved as a lightning - bolt moment , a preindication that this phantasy show about deity live amongst people would n’t be shying by from vile moments of human history . Jones say that his approach to the graphic symbol comes from both folklore and veridical - world occurrent .

Jones : I think I start the process really with just who Anansi really is . All the stories about Anansi , all over the globe , have always centered on this idea that he was the keeper of stories , that we was the spinner of tarradiddle , and that he was never beyond using trickery . Or short-change you into perplex what he wanted . He was very much Machiavellian in that his ends justify his substance . And when I thought about bringing that character to life , I really mat up like he has to suck all the energy out of the elbow room and contain what ’s take place . The hope is that he fascinate you , veracious ?

But , most importantly to me , it ’s always finger as if there was a mo of an apologia , in the way thing were presented , throughout the history of stories that have contained aspects of slipstream as a conversation . They always endeavor to be magnanimous , and I really did n’t need Anansi to be that . I wanted him to be unapologetic about what it is and unapologetic about the means that he was going to expend . For me , he has to believe at all times every word that he is saying . And he does not care , nor does he postulate your countenance in any way , physical body or soma . He can not be petty , he can not be a side somebody in the conversation . It is this and that ’s what it is , and if he decides to deepen his head , good on him .
If You See Odin Coming, Warn a Brother
Jones say that Anansi ’s fit with Shadow Moon in the season finale were about trying to discourage the ex-wife - bunco game about the former deity he ’s been exercise for .
Jones : In dealing with Wednesday , who is a God of War , I ’m not daunted by [ that title ] . Whatever with that . [ Mr. Nancy is ] very much see at Shadow like , “ Why do you trust this dude ? You do n’t even know what ’s going on here . This dandy got you caught in his matrix . Like , imbecile , you should be paying attending . ” A pile of those scenes — the last one , in special — he ’s say to Shadow , “ arouse up . ” Pay aid . Look at what ’s going on around you . Do n’t be fooled . We have a history of being fooled . We have a story of resting on our laurel wreath rather than attacking what we should . So , all of those things came into playing period . I did n’t really need to do the Scatman Crothers version of it . That feel like part of a different era to me . He ’s as much politician as he is a Black Panther . And I recall he ’s human-centered in the sense that he genuinely does believe that the disenfranchised pay off the wrong end of the marijuana cigarette . But he does n’t trust that the disfranchise now , you know , need to “ We Shall have the best ” for get themselves back to where they belong to . If he has to drink down a bunch of y’ all , that ’s ok with Nancy .
For me , the full-grown matter to me is that if life — and this pertain to a flock of the things that we ’re experiencing today — if life is truly about bow down and take the eminent route at the expense of yourself and your children and your children ’s children , that ’s not life . Sacrifice , powerful now , because 2d - grade citizenship ? That ’s not what you want . That ’s what you ’re standing up for if you go along with the status quo . Do n’t sign up for that . To me , that ’s a big part of Nancy . And for me , that ’s his playfulness and his gift and his curse .

Superfly
When it issue forth time to bringing Nancy to life via execution , Jones reached back to a underworld physique he encountered as a child .
Jones : There was a guy that was friends with my sire , a very well - known and muscular hustler on the Eastern seaside . He was a very interesting hombre who would literally rent a rider van and would take the wretched kids from the ghettos and black neighborhood down to the sporting trade good store and just spend money . Buy them whatever they want . Like , Christmas on a Tuesday out of nowhere .
A guy who was out of that tradition very much , proper ? But he was the very definition of the Wrong Dude to Fuck With . And as much as he was eleemosynary , he was as as life-threatening if not more so . And one of the thing that always struck me about him was the he had a very high - pitched voice . And I found his vox to be very funny . Like , I used to laugh when he ’d say things . Just because of the registry . And one of things obviously as an actor that I ’m very aware of is that the notes , the tones are like medicine , right ? Base tones often mean power . And higher tone often imply comedy . So , to me , as a performer , I acknowledge to say “ be intimate you ” mean one affair , and “ fuuck yooou ! ” means something else just by virtue of the tint and intonation . So , I really wanted Nancy to have the ability to make you smile and then in a moment ’s placard go completely the other way .

“ [ It ’s ] very much wanting you pay attention in the switching . So he ’s very intent on making sure his subject matter is exculpated . And also the scummy register — with Anubis , it ’s perfect — but , with Nancy , you ’re not proceed to heed to something for the period of time that Nancy talks if it stay in that cash register . That sorting of sound like Charlie Brown ’s teacher after for a while .
They preserve turn over me these monolithic monologue , which is awe-inspiring , you know ? So his register , to me , call for to have that lilt to it in edict for you to devote attention . And he ’s shift a lot to the Middle Passage , the various piazza black masses wound up off the hard worker ship out of Africa and various dialects we have . I wanted Nancy to angle toward his Guyanese history as much as a part of Barbados , and I require you to hear a snatch of Jamaica … I want you to hear all of the islands in him . And the American that he is at this decimal point , I guess , but never having divorce himself from his African roots . To me , that was really central because African - American refinement is so incredibly divers . I ’m timeworn of biscuit - cutter monolithic representation of black tribe . I need masses to see him to go , “ Yes , I see me . I do n’t just see this latest incarnation of what total darkness is this year , or last year . I ’ve project the years gone preceding and I see the nowadays . ” So , a lot of the choices and just the way he move and the way he talks and the direction he agitate are about the shape of the acculturation that is ours .
Find Him on the Interwebs
If you ’ve been come after American Gods on social medium , you ’ve surely noticed the enthusiastic participation of the show ’s stars and creators . Jones has been one of the most engaged folks and credits his experience on Sleepy Hollow as a turning point as to how he interact with the fandoms around his projects :
Jones : You vex ta remember back in the days of Evolution and Time Machine and projects like that , there was no societal media to engage this style . When I think back to MadTV back in the years , the same thing . I remember go to Comic - Con , no studio , no mesh , because I need to see Sergio Aragones and hang out at like , Artist ’s Alley , and just see , you know , cool artist and dissipate the copper . And nobody help me ! Nobody cared ! There was no groundswell . You could park across the street and it was really not that feverish .
And so I infer Sleepy Hollow was like , “ Whoa , I ’m now doing another musical genre project — plain a fan of this . ” Been to Tarrytown as a kid , and I ’ve interpret Washington Irving and Sleepy Hollow was really optic - opening to me . Sleepy Hollow was such an important show for me , because I ’d never visit that grade of representation on a show before and never seen tropes burst forth that way . I intend , it had more black women than a Shonda Rhimes show . It had a sinister dude and an Asiatic clotheshorse and a Latin dude — even when you went back into time , we were represented in the past . Suddenly , the account of this state was being repeat , redefine with all of these people as player . And I thought that was enormously exciting . And it made me engage in the show and engage in the devotee base in a special path . Sleepy Hollow was a huge learning curve for me and I really sort of just skip both foot into fandom , and I feel really at home and was prosperous to be welcomed .

Jones is attempt to perpetuate that same feeling as a partner in a new digital venture calledCosmunity , aim at letting fans share their passions now with each other .
Jones : I call up well when the local news used to talk about the nut that were dressing up down at the local rule center . And , as I find myself back in that game heavily around 2014 , 2015 and 2016 , it just struck me as foreign that I was download all these dissimilar apps for each con I was go to , and then 72 hours later , the app disappear . Yet , I was looking for way to stay connect with the people that I met there . None of these shows or property survive without fans . Most importantly , once the story has been told , once you broadcast it , once you put it out there — it ’s not yours anymore . It belong to everybody now . And it ’s always been the most exciting part of fandom to see that roleplay itself out . But rooter are thought of as eyeballs and not as citizenry . I interpret it ’s also been uncomfortable for studio and networks who do n’t quite live what to do with a living , breathe community . A fandom might be excited by thing that are n’t exciting to the creators . And so , I just wanted a room to sort of unite that community of interests , and power that residential area and hopefully being that residential district together . Like , if you ’re a seller of fan art and costumes and games , we do n’t level any list fees . You keep 100 % of your sale .
People — adult , specially — have tell me that they ’re nervous about sharing their cosplay and the grind / fan aspects of their lives on Instagram and Facebook , because those are places where you ’re depart to get bullied or shamed . When you go to a con , you do n’t get that . You ’re in a similar - disposed chemical group of people . So , another huge aspect of Cosmunity was building it so you may go to a fandom , or produce a fandom , and then seemingly pile up hoi polloi who see very much the same thing that you do , and fete the same thing that you do .
