agent of SHIELD is often at its best when it focalise on a few key relationship . And last night ’s episode was all about how those relationships make life immensely more complicated for people who process ( and hunt fiend and fascist ) together . It all led up to a decision I ’m still hoping turns out to be a magic trick . pamperer monition !
In “ The Devil You Know , ” Lance Hunter is infiltrate the new Hydra and get close to Ward , but May fear he ’s in over his head and demand Coulson for help . But instead of Hunter getting hurt , the unexpected casualty of Hunter ’s reckless rape on Ward is May ’s ex - husband Andrew , whom Ward has constitute agents close to as an indemnity policy . Andrew is killed , just when he and May were starting to tattle again .
And now we hate Ward twice as much — at least Hunter tag him in the shoulder , even if he catch away yet again .

And meanwhile , Daisy and Mack tail down Lash , the Sonic - the - hedghog - looking cause of death Inhuman , with the mutant - hunting representation ATCU sort of helping and sort of hinder . They track a virus that was get off with an email to some Inhumans , and get a line Dwight Frye , a rogue Social Security Administration prole who ’s also an Inhuman himself . Dwight ’s been help Lash track down other Inhumans . But before they can get any information out of Dwight , Lash kills him — and then transforms into a man … probably someone we ’ve met .
( Also , as a result of this storyline , the ATCU head , Rosalind , is aware that there were Inhumans around before the late outbreak . )
And in a major subplot , Fitz is so disquieted about Simmons that he ’s cranky and obnoxious to hapless Bobbi Morse ( who ’s already freaking out about Hunter . ) And soon enough , Fitz gets a facial expression at Simmons ’ notes and realizes that Simmons is trying to reconstruct the portal that trapped her on that alien satellite for months . Even though Simmons is clearly kind of a basketful case ( in bitchiness of all her reassure bromides to Dr. Andrew ) , she is determined to go back . And I guess next calendar week , we ’re eventually going to find out why she does n’t think her business on that other planet is conclude .

So it seems pretty potential that May is go to blame Lance Hunter for the destruction of her ex - husband — even though Ward feed the order . Lance go in recklessly and then refused to stand down when Ward had a hostage . And this designate just how much of a liability human relationship can be : shaft is being a puncher because Ward critically wound and nearly killed Bobbi , and this lead to May misplace her ex , whom she was just starting to transmit with again after he walked out on her during their attempt to reconnect and find out who they were to each other without SHIELD .
And of course , Ward still blame the SHIELD gang for the death of Agent 33 , the woman he loved , even though Ward himself actually shot her .
Fitz , meanwhile , will do anything to figure out what ’s going on with Simmons — but this seems like it ’s going to lead to him help her reconstruct the portal . Which could be kind of a unfit idea .

Speaking of relationships that could turn out to be a liability , this episode also gives us our first look at SHIELD crop with the new not - so - covert means ATCU . And it ’s more or less jumpy . SHIELD gives more intel to ATCU than Daisy feels prosperous with , and ATCU intelligibly has some other order of business that we do n’t have a go at it about yet . Plus it seems reasonably probable that whoever Lash is , he / she is connected to ATCU ( since Lash knew where to find the armored motortruck where Dwight Frye was being carry imprisoned . And meanwhile , Daisy believe that Coulson in reality has a affair for Rosalind , his remorseless counterpart at ATCU .
And there ’s also another new friend : Alisha , the Inhuman who can divide herself into multiple copies , joins up with the SHIELD team this week to try and aid some fellow Inhumans ( who end up being mutilate by Lash . ) And she thread up under reflexion at SHIELD HQ — so it seems likely that we have n’t seen the last of her .
But for now , I ’m still hoping that the apparent last of Andrew was just a conjuring trick , or else there ’s decease to be hell to pay .
