Here ’s Part 3 of our discussion with Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates , where we talk about the Xbox 2 , its role as the hub of the next generation ’s life room ( jot : mayhap not the nitty-gritty , but it ’s sound awful voiceless - drivey . Also , “ stem thing ? ” ) , as well as Microsoft ’s plans for the future tense of Xbox Live . If you want to catch up , bulge withPart 1 , then head over toPart 2 .

Gizmodo : To sort of get back to the Digital Home — which is patently the direction Microsoft wants to go in the brusque full term , if not the long terminal figure — have you seen that the mediate [ sales ] penetration of the Xbox in the first coevals , definitely better than Nintendo ’s oblation , not up there where Sony is , but definitely a solid # 2 … Do you feel like in the next genesis all the home integration pieces of the Xbox 2 is going to be what it ’s going to take to move you to # 1 as the most adopted cabinet ?

Gates : There ’s no doubt Sony will do a large next propagation loge and we ’ll do a great next genesis box and that competition will be very healthy . People will have a pick . Some of the really hard-core masses will end up with both . The next generation is just move to be another dramatic improvement . What we want to do is get the business concern as a whole by making the games far more approachable .
Today , if you ’re not an aficionado , if you sit down , if within five hour you do n’t do it what the heck is run on … We need a lot of new musical genre of games . Now Xbox Live has been one of our with child triumphs . They are bringing into the game experience — talking to your friends , being able to suffer hoi polloi , do contests , have spectators — and that we believe is a super - important feature go forward . You ’re going to see brilliant software creativity around Live .
Gizmodo : What do you opine the chance are that you guy rope might offer Live without a subscription fee in the next genesis ? Just take that everyone that has an Xbox will have the capability to use it ?

gate : There will always be some constituent of Live that we ’ll declare oneself for free , but there will be significant portions of Live that we ’ll offer for subscription . And the subscription — what is it , $ 39.95 a year?—I mean , hey !
Gizmodo : It ’s not that it ’s expensive so much as it is that with … If everybody had it , there might be more chance for develops to come up with game that utilize it .
Gates : We await the penetration of Live in the next generation to be over 80 % . We ’ll put enough time value into it to make that very , very attractive for citizenry . So anyway , we ’re investing a lot in take hold out just be dramatically more . plainly , we ’ll connect Xbox Love up to what we do with Messenger , so the idea that you may deal medicine , sing to your friends , TV chat with friends , voice chat , text chat — all those thing between the Xbox existence and the PC world — as the Xbox evolves , we ’ll get that go . So there ’s some nice connection that can take place there .

Gizmodo : Now I know you ’ve said that you ’re not concerned — at least for the mo — in roving gambling . It ’s just not a instruction you ’re look to take the Xbox platform . But there has been some talk that the next contemporaries of Xbox will be desegregate , or that there will be a quite a little more integration , [ like ] using it as a hub for personal medium devices : video players , twinkling memory drives , things like that . Have you hombre — is there anything that you ’re move in that focussing for that program yet ? Specifically , where it comes down to using the hard drive of the Xbox to store MP3s or lay in Windows Audio and then copy it to a ostentation private road ; affair like that .
Gates : Well , the PC is our superset machine in terms of media integration . You ’ll see a ton of that poppycock you see on the PC , like the power to listen to your tunes … we did some of this on Xbox 1 , where you could move medicine over and have tracks — it was n’t a required feature for the games . We did build in the music social - case stuff , but we ’ll work up a mess of that stuff into the substructure matter . We ’re evolving the exposure and medicine stuff that ’s in Windows and Xbox will get some of that extra capability . So you ’ll see more synergy between Windows and Xbox . And we think these portable media twist , whether they are euphony only or with video recording , will take off . So we ’ll make certain that we plug into up as much as we can .
The portable infinite … It ’s not like we ’re saying that ’s a boring blank space or anything . There just happens to be one or two thing that Microsoft is n’t doing . And we probably benefit that Sony is fighting Nintendo and has a real challenge on their hands with PSP versus DS , while our grouping is altogether focussed on the next contemporaries TV console .

In terms of # 1 and # 2 , we did in November and December , just slightly outsell Sony in the US . The only place where we in reality did n’t do well with Xbox — if you took all the expectations we had going into it — our sales in Japan is the only position we did n’t achieve much . Not at all . Wherein Europe and the US , we did superintendent - well . With Xbox Live we did very well . Our human relationship with the game publishers we did well . And so we sure as shooting are empowered to , as they say , ‘ play again . ’
Gizmodo : And I do n’t think anybody is going to overlook you in the portable space at this point , because you have these two giant bunt heads .
Gates : There ’s also , in the long running , there ’s this interrogation of the phone equipment , as it have more gambling capability . More people believe portable personal computer , as you see [ the ] Tablet form - factor and what we call ‘ radical - mobile ’ PCs that are really quite little , there ’s going to be quite a bit of stuff and nonsense there .

There ’s no manner portable gaming can come anywhere near the gamy - definition gambling that we ’ll tender in the console - establish Cartesian product . The amount of power and heat that we get to budget for that [ cabinet ] is two order of magnitude more than you may do with a portable gadget . Just to get , you know — we have to have fans , we have to have multiple devotee . I entail , we ’re flex out hundreds of Watt in that thing because the CPU and the computer graphic are just total country - of - the - artistic production incredible devices .
Gizmodo : And a lot of the XNA stuff , if I ’m not mistaken , is sort of setting up the substructure for that in the hereafter . That you could go ahead and develop one thing , and it ’ll work on a phone , but when the next phone that comes out and has more power , it ’ll still work on that [ newfangled ] phone . Just sort of like PCs are now , where you could move up within capabilities within the same software program .
Gates : XNA actually take it at [ the ] odoriferous spot . There ’s a wad of stuff that process on any political program , but it takes the seraphic spot between Xbox and PC , and create it — the amount of work , if you require to place Xbox and PC — the marginal work is like 10 percent , as opposed to 50 percent . And that ’s where — by making all the Direct 3-D stuff the same , and the production environment and the tools environment the same — that ’s where we need it to be really obvious that you may do both .
