On the one hand — like most classical Dr. Who stories that are longer than four episode — “ The Ice warrior ” has some pacing government issue . ( In fact , the VHS acquittance , which condensed the two miss episodes into a single 20 - minute segment , feel a bit zippier — and luckily , that condense reconstruction is available on the videodisk as well . )
But watch out this taradiddle after 45 - odd geezerhood , it ’s easy to see why the Ice warrior joined the little pantheon of the show ’s most memorable baddie , alongside the Daleks and the Cybermen . They have wads of personality , and loads of threat — mostly thanks to Bernard Bresslaw , who plays the Ice Warrior leader Varga with a Brobdingnagian assortment of tic , from the way he range his head to the way he laughs with a “ sss - sss - Selective Service System ” sound at the humanity he ’s about to veil . Varga becomes both a memorable graphic symbol and kind of a scary mofo .
The scene where one of the Ice Warriors chase Victoria around some polar burrow still work pretty well , but any panorama where Varga is using his immense majority and his sardonic personality to sweep over the man is just pure gold . classical sixties MD Who is full of terrorize creatures that get defrosted , from the random baddies of “ Keys of Marinus ” to the Cybermen in “ Tomb of the Cybermen ” — but “ Ice Warriors ” makes specially good role of the “ terrifying shape coming to life as the crank melt around it ” trope .
