His Dark Materialshas taken us on a spot of a roller coaster . Some of the sequence haveshined , while others havemissed the markin a big way . The piquant and excited season finale forebode a bright future for His Dark Materials . But I would n’t be surprised if some family are no longer along for the ride .

“ The Betrayal ” is an model of what the first time of year of His Dark Materialsshould have beenall along . The stride is upstanding , the prospect are gripping , and the stake are high . It lie with when to speed things up and , more importantly , when to slow things down . This episode doesn’tdump expositionin our faces — rather , the season ’s remaining cardinal plot point are dusted ( get it ) over scenes so as not to distract from the part . Though there are still a few clunky moments — His Dark Materials is far from perfect .

Lyra ( Dafne Keen ) and her good protagonist Roger ( Lewin Lloyd ) have chance themselves in the plate / inquiry lab of Lyra ’s father , Lord Asriel ( James McAvoy ) . He ’s made it clear he want petty to do with Lyra , even though it ’s obvious he cares for her , but Roger is another story . It turns out that Lyra was n’t destined to convey Asriel the alethiometer : She brought him Roger .

Much of the installment is spent in the laboratory during the hours before Asriel ’s world - altering experiment . It ’s been a while since His Dark Materials slowed thing down long enough to give us this much blank with its characters , and it was a brisk change of tread . The scenes between Lyra and Asriel were specially meaty . We only gota bit of timewith McAvoy ’s Asriel before the time of year conclusion , but it was enough to show us just how much he loves playing this fictitious character . Asriel may be passionate and driven , but he ’s not hardhearted — he see the cost of everything he ’s doing . This is why he keeps trying to close himself off from his notion . There ’s one moment when we see him share a joke with Lyra about her mother , only for him to shut out down and assert they stop their conversation . But you could still see the rent stinging his eyes .

There is one scene in the episode that could face some heat , the one between Asriel and Lyra about the nature of Dust . Before now , the serial publication had suggest at the larger role of Dust and its connection to sinfulness . But here , it ’s all laid out on the tabular array , in a way that embody Pullman ’s criticism of the Catholic Church and using faith as a agency to control the great unwashed . Asriel tell Lyra the Magisterium views Dust as Original Sin , meaning the moment in the Bible when Eve accepted and eat the yield of the Tree of Knowledge in the Garden of Eden . He ’s deeply critical of this story — in a way that , as someone who was involved in the church as a tiddler , made me find that safe old “ spiritual guilt ” was being a political party to potential profanation .

Asriel points out that the write up of Adam and Eve is nothing more than a myth , perpetuated by the Magisterium to make the great unwashed subservient , and adds that the science of Dust should be learned and share freely among the masses . It ’s a powerful assertion with parallel to the science of development and climate change , and one I conceive of will get some pushback from conservative Christian audiences — especially considering what else happens in the episode .

Lyra rushes to Roger ’s side with Iorek and his bear United States Army . We get an vivid action mechanism scenery between the Magisterium and the bear , with bullets and trunk flying as a boniface of daemons soar through the sky organise to strike . It depend great . Meanwhile , Roger is kicking and screaming in his John Milton Cage Jr. as his own demigod runs around in a panic screaming that she “ does n’t require to leave ” him . This was the emotional tautness I needed in the Bolvangar episode , to find for these fry as they had part of their souls ripped from their bodies . I make out part of that is thanks to Lewin Lloyd ’s performance , which was really layer and nuanced , specially for a boy of his age .

Asriel gets quick to complete his experiment , which would discerp Roger from his daemon to bill his automobile . This was probably the most crushing import of the episode . You see , Asriel ’s motorcar is n’t like the one at Bolvangar . It does n’t just return like a closure by compartment blade . Asriel is forced to slowly and painfully jerk the blade down as Roger pleads with him to stop over . And you could see it in his eyes : Asriel have a go at it he ’s doing something unforgivable , but he resist to stop . Lyra arrives right at the final moment . She shares a coup d’oeil with her best friend , and then he conk out . Rising from the blank space where his body consist is a great ray of light of spark , shining into the Aurora , which then collapses and opens a room access into another public .

Mrs. Coulter finally resist , saying she want to focalize on find Lyra and keeping her safe ( not know she ’s merely steps away ) , and Asriel go away through the door to his next grand adventure . But what about Lyra ? She spends a few minutes say goodbye to Roger — and I have to hand it to Keen for how well she expresses Lyra ’s guilt trip and heartache . afterwards , she and Pantalaimon decide they need to try and give up Asriel , Mrs. Coulter , and the Magisterium from trying to take control of Dust . They want to protect it and the only way of life to do that is through that door . Just as Will walks to the doorway that Boreal had been using all these age , Lyra heads toward hers . Lyra and Will , in parallel worlds that otherwise would never touch , enter the doors at the same fourth dimension . Two strangers coming together in a way that will change the lot of all worlds forever .

The sequence terminate on the hope of a new mankind , and a better show . Overall , His Dark Materials flush it to instill , but these final instant made me bright . We ’ve gotten the gravelly darn out of the way and can focus on the characters , alternatively of pass most of our sentence being tell a bunch of stuff while not understanding what much of it mean . We might have to wait until time of year two to see if the series can dust off its rough edge , but I have organized religion we can turn things around .

Random Musings:

As mixed as the show has been so far , I ’m still thankful we live in a world where His Dark Materials has been give its own television show . If you ’d told 12 - twelvemonth - old Beth she ’d be insure Will and Lyra on the modest screenland , she would n’t have get laid what to do with herself .

The scene where Lyra was in the bath and Roger offered to take the air in backwards so he would n’t see her was scented , and felt like a good character mo that we require more of in this season .

Poor Thorold . He could n’t catch a break .

Today I learned that Lord Asriel ’s name is derive from “ Azrael , ” the name of the Angel of Death in some religious sects and lore . Also , this note I wrote about Asriel and Mrs. Coulter ’s scene seemed fitting : “ Two neat masses absolute in their greatness hear to convert each other . ”

I ’ve got to give props for the last pellet of the episode . The conniption goes quiet over the wilderness as the photographic camera pans up from Roger ’s body to show the city in the sky . A reminder of what was sacrificed to make Asriel ’s “ great ” moment bechance .

Book comparison ( spoilers ): Yes , I recognize that it ’s not revolutionary for a series about a literal war on god to include the scene where Asriel dip on unionised faith . But regard 2007 ’s The Golden Compass was so worried about pushback from Christians that it absent the religious idea tout ensemble , including this part of the narrative was still a powerful choice .
