Katy Perry’s mother is ramping up her involvement in conservative politics after formally declaring her candidacy for a seat on her local Republican Party’s central committee.

Hudson, 75, filed her candidate paperwork in late November and has since qualified to appear on the March ballot, according to Santa Barbara County’s elections office.

Central committee members are generally tasked with promoting their party’s platform within the community and supporting their party’s candidates in local elections. If Hudson’s campaign is successful, she would represent the Santa Barbara County Republican Party.

“We want to get the conservatives in there to make a difference,” Hudson previously toldDaily Mailof her motive for running, reportedly calling the county’s current GOP officials “lackadaisical” in the same Veterans Day conversation.

PEOPLE reached out to Hudson and Perry for comment.

Hudson’s formal foray into Republican politics comes years after her daughter Perry, 39, revealed in 2016 that her parents voted forDonald Trumpin the presidential election.

The “Chained to the Rhythm” singer — who has publicly supported Democratic presidential candidates throughout her career — shared the revelation in a speech atHillary Clinton’s 2016 election night party in New York City.

“Tonight my parents voted for Trump,” Perry said in her speech, according toTIMEmagazine. “But you know what? We will still all be sitting at the same table for Thanksgiving. And this is the moment we need to remember: that we all love our parents, and we all love our children.”

“And I can rest easy knowing that both of my young nieces at home will never see themselves less than equal, anything other than equal,” the singer continued. “So, remember, today is not just a finish line. It also marks the beginning of all the work we must come together to do.

“We need everyone — gay, straight, black, white, brown, spray-tanned, people of faith and people that just love. So let’s sing a song of unity. Let’s be one nation indivisible with a kick-ass president,” Perry concluded.

The singer appears to still be close with her mom, despite their political differences. In November, Hudson posted aphotowith Perry on Instagram as she visited the singer for thefinal show of her Las Vegas residency.

“Katy’s last night of her 2 year residency at Resorts World Las Vegas 👏🏼👏🏼,” Hudson wrote in the caption.

The mother-daughter duo were seen smiling next to each other in the snap as Perry posed wearing half-finished makeup.
