The actress finalized her divorce from Andrew Prutt in 2013. The pair, who married in 2004, shares a 15-year-old son, Roman.
Spencer channeled her experience with divorce intoExtended Family, in which she plays a woman who tries to maintain an amicable relationship with her ex-husband (Cryer) while in a new relationship with Trey, the owner of the Boston Celtics (Faison).
“It’s hard, but I think the best art is personal,” Spencer said. “It feels like it’s happening to you and you get to project your life onto it. I think for my son, who grew up going to two different homes, like oh, he can scold us later, ‘Why didn’t you do that?’ I think all of us have said it’s nice to put something on the air where it just presents doing something a little differently and just to create more conversation around it.”

Spencer saidExtended Family"is not necessarily a show about divorce."
She explained, “It’s a show about family. And an extended family. The family coming together, bringing Trey into the family unit and he is now part of the family.”
